Every Tuesday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

Tea and Newspapers  
Every Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am to 12 noon.

Numbers are limited, please contact branch for more details.

Tea and Newspapers groups give adults the opportunity to meet new people, socialise and discuss local and national affairs in the newspapers while enjoying complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits.

Knit and Natter  
Every Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am to 12 noon.

Booking is essential as numbers are limited. Please contact staff for more details.

Knit and Natter groups are for adults who enjoy knitting, crochet, cross stitch and other crafts. They are free of charge to attend and participants have the opportunity to share hints and tips, swap patterns, meet new people and learn new skills. Members can bring along a project they are already working on or can start something new.

Rhythm and Rhyme  
Every Wednesday.
Children attending this event must be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential.

Rhythm and Rhyme sessions introduce parents and children aged 0 - 4 years to the wonder of rhymes, songs and stories.

Each session offers an entertaining opportunity for children to engage with others, provides a good foundation to develop their reading, listening and language skills and of course to have lots of fun!

Quiet Time  

Quiet Time every Tuesday from 5:00pm until 6:00pm. Lights will be dimmed and we will do our best to keep noise to a minimum to provide a peaceful atmosphere.

Materials such as mindful colouring will be available on demand from staff.  

Suitable for all.

A relaxed weekly space for adults to create junk journals using collage, ephemera, and mixed media.
Bring your own journal and any scraps, stickers, and stationery you love working with. 
All experience levels welcome Cut, paste, chat, and create at your own pace.

Blooming Beauty: The Botanical Art of Maurice Shannon.  

Whitehead Library is delighted to host a stunning new art exhibition by Maurice Shannon throughout the month of April. Inspired by the natural beauty of his own garden, Maurice’s original watercolour paintings capture the intricate details and vibrant colours of plants and flowers. Through a skilled and sensitive use of watercolour, his work celebrates the richness and delicacy of the natural world. Visitors are warmly invited to enjoy this beautiful collection on display in the library all month long.

 

Family friendly event.

Time for Tea  

Join us for Time for Tea at the library as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. This special initiative invites people to spend some time in their local library over a cup of tea while connecting with others in the community. Take a moment to pause, have a chat, and enjoy a warm, welcoming space. Whether you come along with a friend or meet someone new, Time for Tea is all about conversation, community, and supporting positive mental wellbeing. Drop in, share a cuppa, and discover how libraries help bring people together and support good mental health and community wellbeing.

Creative Calm: Art for Wellbeing  

Take a break and get creative during Mental Health Awareness Week. Join local artist Maurice Shannon for a relaxed drawing and painting workshop at the library. This friendly session is all about enjoying art, unwinding, and giving your mind a creative boost. No experience needed-just come along and have a go!

The Big Family Switch Off-Family Games Extravaganza!  

Take a break from screens and enjoy some quality time together at the library! Join us for The Big Family Switch Off, a relaxed and fun session for families as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. We will have a variety of activities for all ages, including board games, Lego building, and jigsaw puzzles-perfect for spending time together, getting creative, and unwinding. If the weather is kind, we’ll also head outside for a game of hopscotch. Drop in, switch off from devices, and reconnect through simple, playful activities the whole family can enjoy. Everyone is welcome!

Chain Reaction  

Start a Chain Reaction with us in Whitehead Library for Empathy Day! Kids will be able to come in and write compliments on colourful paper strips and link them together to create a giant chain of kindness and empathy. Watch how one thoughtful word can spark another, spreading positivity throughout the library and beyond. The event will run during the whole of the Empathy Festival period and then accumulate in the chain being put together and displayed on Empathy Day.

 

Thursday 4 June until Thursday 11 June 2026.

Creative Connections: Art to Beat Loneliness  

As part of Loneliness Awareness Week, join us for a calming and creative drawing and painting workshop at the library. Led by local artist Maurice Shannon, this session offers adults a welcoming space to connect with others, express feelings, and explore creativity. Through simple art activities, you can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of drawing and painting while fostering some new social connections. No experience is required-everyone is welcome to come, create, and connect. All Materials provided.

The Out of Hours Service allows adults (aged 18 years and over) controlled access to Whitehead Library for an additional 34 hours per week outside of normal opening hours.
Registered members can access a limited but important range of services on a self-service basis, including broadband/Wi-Fi access, printing facilities, study space and book borrowing. To register, just call in or contact the library during normal opening hours and ask staff for details.
