Christmas Reading

At this time of year some people take the opportunity to reread their favourite books – returning to old comfort reads, the nostalgic stories that ground them and remind them of happy Christmas’s past. They don’t need to be Christmas stories – though I know that A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is a favourite with many. The Muppet’s Christmas Carol film has perhaps superseded the book but it’s always good to go back to the source material! Books available on the Libraries NI Catalogue
Personally I love to get lost in the latest addition to a good crime series – this year for example I am planning on catching up with the latest Scarpetta book – Sharp Force by Patricia Cornwell and have saved the new Cormoran Strike book- The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith - for the holidays. I have a few pre-publication books to dive into as well (one of the perks of the job) so I don’t think I will be stuck for reading material over the holidays.
Sharp force / Patricia Cornwell
The hallmarked man / Robert Galbraith
After all the chaos of unwrapping presents, eating turkey and Christmas pudding I would hope that there would be the anticipation of that special book for you to look forward to too as you relax in the aftermath.
Signing off this blog post with a thought for all the many stories contained within our books - and wishing you all a peaceful and bookfilled Christmas.
The Night before Christmas - in Library Land
Every book was awake
To the jingle of bells
And the potent smell
of Christmas Cake
Waiting with hope
For the sleigh to return
Heavy footsteps,
then the smell of soap
He washes away the smoke and the grime
at the end of a long, happy night
of present leaving, mince pie eating,
and chimney sliding – such a sight!
Then sitting in his favourite chair
Refreshed and warm of heart
He reads to them their favourite tale
Of Christmas from the start
Of stables and stars
Of men from afar
Of angels and gifts to the world.
And back on their shelves, contented and warm
The books settle down with the hope
that tomorrow they too
Will bring contentment and warmth
To everyone.
Spreading peace and goodwill their main end
Till the next and final chapter is penned
